Situation with the Jamaican Wikipedia

[change up di source]

As I see this Wiki-project grows up, but it needs some help in it's creation. It has it's own request for creation, 500 most used messages have been translated, but Statistic is not well. For creation we need minimum 5 active users in this Wiki (minimum 10 edits per month for 1 person). Please, act! This wiki looks very good, but it needs your help in creation! Please, say, what do you think about it?--Andrijko Z. 17:00, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

  • I will try to find some volunteers right now. I believe we need some Jamaicans, so I will forward this link to my friends and ask them to do the same. I can't promise to be very active, but I will try to do at least the minimum you mentioned. --Hroobjartr 21:29, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
    • I understand the situation. I'll try to help out, and hopefully, we'll get more help.  Hazard-SJ  ±  04:54, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
      • Excuse for not saying anything before but I was a bit busy. I'll try to find some help and to have more editions in Jamaican. --Chabi 10:15, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi SamBlob, I am not knowledgeable about Jamaican Patois/Creole, but it would appear from User:Yocahuna that there is a couple of different orthography's for written Jamaican Patois/Creole. Perhaps the orthography you use is the natural one? And the other is an academic one? I really don't know either way, but this could be one reason why "spelling" is different? Russavia (talk) 05:35, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I'll be glad if rather be up this section !! --89.215.201.73 11:55, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

What is this?

[change up di source]

Jamaican Patois? Why is there a Wikipedia in this language? IllogicMink (talk) 00:05, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, as can also be seen on the info page. --MF-W {a, b} 23:44, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
This is just English in a weird Jamaican accent. There's no point having a Wikipedia in it. IllogicMink (talk) 07:39, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
Fortunately, your linguistic criteria is not the definitive one. You've shown your knowledge of Creole linguistics with your comments. Chabi — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.33.27.51 (reasonin'works) 09:04, 20 April 2015 (UTC).
Who, me? IllogicMink (talk) 08:33, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Jamaican Patois is a creole language, not an "accent" or even a dialect of English. The orthography used does appear to be a problem. Until that is solved satisfactorily, I doubt the incubator will ever improve to the point of going live. - BilCat (talk) 21:13, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

This is hardly Patois

[change up di source]

judging from my experience (half of a year living with jamaicans, who were talking to each other in patois) i would say that what you write here is NOT patois. and this spelling is something horrible tbh - i strongly doubt it is used in any academic sources where patois is long-described. and are there any jamaicans down here at all? i guess (from what i've read here) this project is run but white rasta wannabes, this kind of "patois" is what they "speak" over the internet to sound more "jamaican" (that's laughable in fact). facts my brothers. -- 93.85.170.171 10:04, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Alright, I looked again and I appear to have been right. Germans, Ukrainians, Russians thats who i see here. Guys, stop it, this is not funny at all. Read some literature on topic before attempting to write Patois. It is a SEPARATE language, and knowing english plus listening to some reggae won't teach you Patois. Patois is not a "reggae language", Jamaicans actually speak it. And it sounds nowhere similar to what you write here. If you want to be more rasta then your objective is far removed from purposes of wikipedia, and trying to relate to rasta culture more by doing this bullshit is pathetic, yo. -- 93.85.170.171 10:11, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Your concern is noted. With the exception of the administrator, the editors working on this project are all Jamaican native speakers of Patwa utilizing Cassidy orthography with which you may not be familiar. The register utilized is basilectal, again with which you may not be familiar. They are in addition advocates of Patwa becoming recognized officially as a nation language, and one has authored a Patwa primer. Rasta is a dialect of Jamaican and has not been utilized so your notion is baseless.--Yocahuna (talk) 13:24, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
The Bible New Testament has been translated into this orthography. The text and audio version can also be found here. --A-eng (talk)‎ 05:17, 18 Mie 2016 (EST)

To be fair, like the Administrator I'm not a Jamaican native speaker. But I'm trying to help with administrative tasks and am doing my best, even if I make mistakes. In the meantime, I would direct the IP to Help:Jumiekan Patwa spelling policy and the website it is based on for more information before s/he continues to criticize. Please help translate to your language

Screenshot of Compact Language Links interlanguage list

Compact Language Links has been available as a beta-feature on all Wikimedia wikis since 2014. With compact language links enabled, users are shown a much shorter list of languages on the interlanguage link section of an article (see image). Based on several factors, this shorter list of languages is expected to be more relevant for them and valuable for finding similar content in a language known to them. More information about compact language links can be found in the documentation.

From today onwards, compact language links has been enabled as the default listing of interlanguage links on this wiki. However, using the button at the bottom, you will be able to see a longer list of all the languages the article has been written in. The setting for this compact list can be changed by using the checkbox under User Preferences -> Appearance -> Languages

The compact language links feature has been tested extensively by the Wikimedia Language team, which developed it. However, in case there are any problems or other feedback please let us know on the project talk page. It is to be noted that on some wikis the presence of an existing older gadget that was used for a similar purpose may cause an interference for compact language list. We would like to bring this to the attention of the admins of this wiki. Full details are on this phabricator ticket (in English).

This message could only be written in English. We will really appreciate if this message can be translated for other users of this wiki. Thank you. On behalf of the Wikimedia Language team: --Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk)‎ 02:07, 24 Juun 2016 (EST)
